At Nursling, all pupils in KS 2 enjoy weekly French lessons. We believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for our children. It enables them to develop their communication skills. In addition their knowledge of how language works is extended through exploring differences and similarities between French and English.  Learning another language gives children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others. As it is widely believed that the early acquisition of a foreign language facilitates the learning of other languages later in life, we focus on inspiring children through lessons that are interactive, meaningful, and above all - fun! Greatest emphasis is given to speaking and listening, with some reading and writing where relevant. Children learn how to ask and answer questions, interpret meaning, use correct pronunciation and understand basic grammar.

In Lower KS 2, topics covered include greetings, counting, following classroom instructions, describing the weather, giving the day and date in French, naming parts of the body and communicating people’s appearances and clothing.

In Upper KS 2 topics covered include school subjects and routines,  describing homes and identifying items in different rooms,  naming places in towns and villages, asking the way and giving directions, ordering food in cafes, asking for items in shops and exchanging information about hobbies.

In both Key Stages there is an emphasis on using songs, rhymes and actions to acquire new vocabulary. Children regularly create role plays, using props that they create themselves, such as a menu for a café scene or a map for presenting a weather forecast. Upper KS 2 children plan an annual French breakfast, which is enjoyed by staff and children alike!
